To begin this post, there are two obvious observations that need to be made: first, we have been in Montenegro one year now, and second, this post is long overdue. That being said, it is time to recap and celebrate what has been an amazing year for our family. It has been a year full of many joys and wonderful adventures, meeting people, making great friends, learning a new language, starting a business, working through challenging transitions, making it through school, struggling through illness, hosting guests, traveling many miles, and just doing life in another country and culture.

So here’s our life the last eight months, in pictures:

We started out our year in Belgrade, Serbia.

Later in January, our dear friends, Bill and Regina Lewis came for a visit. What a blessing they were to us! After they landed in Croatia, we took them to the city of Herceg Novi in Montenegro for the Mimosa Festival.

Hannah turned 15 in February, and shared her birthday with a few school friends.

More traveling in March. This time, we went to Greece and saw the great Acropolis in Athens. Fantastic!

And, a short hike on Mt. Olympus. We had to stop when we reached snow!

Joy turned 10 in April and celebrated with her friends and her special Montenegrin tutor, Selma.

Another big celebration in April: 20 years of marriage!

Yes, there is snow on the mountains in May here. Awesome mountain biking through Durmitor National park with friends from Virginia.

Back to Greece in June. Brit took part in the Legion Run in Thessaloniki. Obstacles, mud, ice tank–the works for this valiant team!

June also brought us some dear friends from Russia! Enjoying the amazing views in Kotor–a must-visit place!

family rafting

To celebrate our “jubilee” year (our 20th, Hannah’s 15th, and Joy’s 10th), we went rafting the Tara River with our good friends, the Kirkpatricks. Though the water was frigid in July, we had a blast!

Next to the Tara River, after our rafting adventure.

We spent 4 days in the coastal Montenegrin town of Ulcinj in early August. This was the view from our balcony.

So there’s eight months in a nutshell.  While we have been amazed at the beauty of Montenegro, there have been several people that have truly embraced and helped us along the way. Our dear friend and Meanderbug colleague (see below), Žana, has helped us navigate everything from business, to schooling, to even hospitals here. She has been such a blessing to us all.  Thanks to our amazing tutor, Dragica, we have begun the process of learning the local language. We have so far to go. Fortunately she is both gracious and patient!

One project Brit is working on with some others is a website promoting travel to southeast Europe. We encourage you to go to the links above for more pictures and video of some of the places we have been. Also, bookmark the site for your future Balkan travel guide and plan a trip to come see this beautiful part of the world, and visit us while you’re at it.

When we arrived last year, with a dog and a plethora of baggage, we did not know what would await us. What a great adventure it has been, and we look forward to what is to come!
